The Eden Rock BioRock Pilot brings together international scientific expertise and local marine knowledge to test an approach to coral restoration in one of Grand Cayman’s most iconic marine sites. Through monitoring, training and community engagement, the project will generate evidence and build practical skills for future reef conservation in the Cayman Islands.

BIOROCK IN ACTION

BioRock is an innovative marine restoration technology that uses safe, low-voltage electrical current passed through a submerged steel structure. This encourages naturally occurring minerals in seawater to form a limestone-like coating. The process may provide favourable conditions for coral growth and recovery. The Eden Rock pilot will help assess how the technology performs in Cayman waters.

The Method

  • Installation: A low-profile steel structure is secured to suitable seabed substrate, subject to Coastal Works Permit approval.
  • Mineral Accretion: A low-voltage electrical current encourages naturally occurring minerals in seawater to form a limestone-like coating.
  • Monitoring: The project will document changes to the structure and surrounding marine environment to evaluate performance under Cayman conditions.
  • Learning: Findings will be shared with local marine specialists, divers and the wider community.

    THE PROJECT JOURNEY

From initial site assessment to ongoing ecological monitoring, the Eden BioRock pilot follows a structured, scientific rollout.

    Education

    •   Phase 1 - Surveying & Permitting: Site assessment, baseline observations and regulatory approvals.
    •   Phase 2 - Installation:  Installing the BioRock structure and low-voltage system, subject to the required approvals.
    •   Phase 3 - Training & Engagement: Building local expertise through diver trainier, apprentices and community outreach.
    •   Phase 4 - Monitoring & Learning:  Evaluating performance, documenting results and sharing findings with Cayman.
